George McGary III

George “Butch” McGary III 72, of Butler, passed away Monday, July 5, 2021, and was welcomed into the arms of his daughter, Allie, after a sudden and unexpected illness.

Butch was born Feb. 1, 1949, in Butler, and was the only child of the late George E. McGary, Jr and Evelyn Kemerer McGary.

Butch was raised in Butler and was a graduate of Butler High School in 1967.

Following high school, Butch worked for United Telephone/Embarq for 40 years until his retirement in 2009. His greatest pride was his 26 years of honorable service to the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves. His service included several stateside active-duty deployments and he retired with the distinguished rank of Master Sergeant. Butch also served his community and fellow veterans in many roles as a lifetime member of the American Legion and charter member of the American Legion Riders Post 820 in Monroeville. Butch had been a previous firefighter and rescue tech for the Prospect Volunteer Fire Department.Butch spent his retirement days enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchild with Sue. He was an avid reader; he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, watching NASCAR and the Steelers, fishing with friends, and “tinkering” in his garage. Butch enjoyed coffee and donuts with friends and family and had a gift for storytelling, reciting history, and never leaving an ear unbent. Butch had a special love for Allie's cat, Chloe, and he thoroughly enjoyed his volunteer work at Jean B. Purvis Community Health Clinic in Butler.Butch is survived by his wife, Sue, of Butler; son, George E. “BJ” McGary IV, of Butler, and his children, Morgan and her partner Ryan, Madison and fiancé Tyler, and their daughters, Paisleigh Grace, MaKenna, and MacKenzie; son, Chris McGary, his wife, Jodi, and their children, Laney, Emma, and Ryan, of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. Butch was looking forward to the arrival of his great grandson in November. Butch is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mary Raabe, of Butler and several extended family members and friends.Butch was pre-deceased by his parents, grandparents, father-in-law, James Raabe of Butler; sister-in-law, Kathy Murphy of Alabama; and beloved daughter, Allison McGary, of Butler.McGary — Friends of George “Butch” McGary III, who died Monday, July 5, 2021, will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 East North St., Butler.A Military Honor Guard service will be held prior to the funeral service, which will be held immediately following visitation at 6 p.m.A private internment will occur at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies at a date to be determined.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that charitable donations are to be made in Butch's honor to the Spina Bifida Association of Western PA, 3000 Stonewood Dr. #100, Wexford, PA 15090 or Wounded Warriors Foundation, 600 River Avenue, Suite 400, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
