Fla. driver lands in hospital after Route 8 rear end crash

Police responded to a two-vehicle accident near Diehl Mitsubishi on Route 8 at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday, where a driver was transported to a Pittsburgh hospital for his injuries.

A young male from Florida was transported via helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital after the car he was driving rear ended another vehicle on Route 8 Wednesday afternoon, police said.

According to Penn Township Chief Jack Ripper, a woman driving a Toyota RAV was making a right turn from the southbound lane into the Diehl Mitsubishi lot on 258 Pittsburgh Road when her car was struck from behind by a Nissan Versa Note around 1:20 p.m.

The male driver of the Nissan was in and out of consciousness at the scene, but the woman driving the Toyota was not severely injured, police said.

Ripper said the man was transported by Butler Ambulance Service to a helipad, and was flown from there to the Pittsburgh hospital.

The Nissan was totaled, Ripper said, but the Toyota sustained less damage. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Ripper said the responding departments rerouted traffic from the southbound lane to the center lane, and let northbound traffic flow normally. The road reopened around 3 p.m.

Also responding to the scene were Middlesex Township Volunteer Fire Company, Butler Township police and the Butler County Sheriff's Office.

Ripper said the crash is still under investigation.
