Union for Giant Eagle ratifies 4-year contract

Giant Eagle employees represented by UFCW Local 1776 ratified a four-year contract last week, covering some 5,000 workers, including those at stores in nearby North Hills neighborhoods.

Roughly 5,300 current employees at 35 corporate-owned Giant Eagle supermarkets in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia are covered by the new agreement, for which United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 1776 members voted 90% in favor.

Nearby UFCW stores include those in the North Hills neighborhoods of Glenshaw, McCandless and Ross Township.

“This agreement increases wages across the board, strengthens retirement programs and maintains the excellent health and welfare benefit our members have at zero-dollar member contribution,” said Wendell Young IV, Local 1776 president.

The agreement seemed to please both the union and Giant Eagle, with the supermarket’s executive vice president, Bill Artman, saying he appreciated the collaborative spirit the bargaining committee brought to the table.

“This agreement demonstrates our appreciation of the exemplary work of our team members, particularly over the last 18 months, and it ensures that we continue to provide our communities with the highest quality of products and service,” Artman said.
