Mars care center reopens after 14-day quarantine

St. John Specialty Care Center in Mars reopened Thursday after a 14-day quarantine.

The facility had shut its doors to outside visitors after the building was exposed when a staff member tested positive for COVID-19.

“We had a staff member test positive for COVID, even though she was wearing PPE,” said Samantha Rapuk, executive director at Lutheran SeniorLife. “She hadn't developed symptoms while she was here, but we were instructed that since she was here during her infectious period, which is two days prior to the onset of symptoms, we would need to quarantine and test all residents and staff for two weeks from (the) date of last exposure.”

A second staff member tested positive for COVID-19 that week, but was not present in the building to expose residents.

“Everything's open and normal as of today,” said Mark O'Donnell, director of System Development and Communications at Lutheran SeniorLife. “It's kind of a routine thing.”

One unit portion of a floor is still under quarantine pending the results of some COVID-19 tests, Rapuk said, but once those results are in and as long as they are negative, the unit should reopen soon.
