Big Butler Fair sees record turnout

The grandstands were full Saturday night for Bullride Mania at the Big Butler Fair. Events included bull riding, barrel racing and mutton busting.
Over 100,000 tickets sold

The Big Butler Fair made up for its canceled event in 2020 with a record-breaking attendance this year.

Mike Roenigk, president of the fair's board of directors, said this year's attendance numbers broke records, and he estimated that more than 100,000 people bought admission throughout the event. That's without counting children under 6 years of age, who had free admission to the fair.

“It was great to be back,” Roenigk said. “We set new records this year.”

The Big Butler Fair officially began July 2 and ended Saturday. Roenigk said daily attendance was good, but scheduled entertainment such as the fireworks show on July 4 and the demolition derbies were some of the most well-attended events this year.He also said the inclement weather didn't bog down attendance too badly, especially for the school bus demolition derby.“I don't think we could have fit another soul in there,” Roenigk said. “We did surprisingly well, even in the rain, but that kept us down a little bit.”The good attendance brought consistent business to the fair's vendors as well. Amy Metrick, Butler County's 4-H educator, manned the petting zoo, which raised money for the 32 4-H groups in Butler County.“We had an excellent week,” Metrick said. “I have never been in the petting zoo when it was that busy.”Artist Gary Coles was at the fair selling paintings, T-shirts and offering do-it-yourself spin art at a booth. He said he did well on the days of fair weather, while the rain and heat kept some away.“I did fairly well with the people,” Coles said. “I look forward to maybe trying it next year, and kind of doing the same thing, but just upping the scale.”Roenigk said he appreciated the organizers and the attendees of the fair for their continued support.“Pretty much everybody played their role,” he said.

Bull riding was one of the main events at the Big Butler Fair Saturday.
