Police follow trail of man who OD'd to arrest alleged drug dealer

Evans City Seven Fields Police identified an alleged drug dealer after following a trail left by a man who overdosed in November.

Police have charged Morgan A. Leon, 31, of Cranberry Township, with possession with intent to sell and criminal use of a communication facility, both felonies.

Following her arraignment June 30, Leon was released on $50,000 unsecured bond.

According to charging documents, Leon's charges stem from a Nov. 5 call for an overdose at a Franklin Road home in Seven Fields. Police said EMS said Patrick M. Szwez, 33, was dead when they found him.

“The cellphone belonging to Szwez was inside his bedroom on top of the dresser and was seized as evidence to be searched at a later day,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.

Szwez was a graduate of Seneca Valley High School, received a bachelor's degree from Ashford University and had been working in the insurance industry, according to his obituary, published Nov. 8.

His obituary also noted the nature of Szwez's death, labeling his addiction a “battle.”

According to police, Szwez's death came one day after his release from an inpatient facility where he was being treated for drug abuse. He had completed a 30-day treatment program.

Police said they found paraphernalia and full stamp bags of heroin inside Szwez's room. The cellphone is what led police to Leon.

The text chains regarding two different deals on Nov. 4 and 5 were listed in the affidavit. During the Nov. 5 text chain, Szwez specifically arranges to buy a “bun” from Leon for about $60.

“Thank you so much Morgan I really appreciate it,” Szwez texted.

A bundle, also known as a “bun,” is about 10 stamp bags worth of heroin.

During the transaction, Szwez also mentioned he didn't have enough cash outright, and a stop at an ATM would be needed. According to the texts, he offered his card to Leon to take the money out for the deal.

Police said transaction information from Szwez's bank and video surveillance from the gas station aligned with this version of events.

“(Leon) is seen using the ATM inside the store and exits the store at 4:47 p.m.,” police said.

According to an autopsy by the Butler County Coroner's Office, Szwez died from a combined drug poisoning, including fentanyl, heroin, buspirone, doxylamine, hydroxyzine, acetaminophen and venlafaxine.

“Based on the totality of circumstance and text communications between Szwez and Leon on Nov. 5 was sold one bundle of heroin laced with fentanyl by Leon that were found on the scene.”

Leon is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing July 30.
