State Supreme Court candidate visits fair

Pennsylvania Supreme Court candidate Kevin Brobson, center, and his daughter, Claire, tour the Big Butler Fair's antique display from fair director Harold Kennedy, left, Tuesday with state Sen. Scott Hutchinson, back. Brobson was at the fair Tuesday for a campaign stop and tour with fair staff.

Kevin Brobson, a Republican candidate for the state Supreme Court, visited the Big Butler Fair Tuesday to meet with fair representatives and local officials.

Brobson has been on the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court since January 2010, and was elected by justices as its president in January. He said he is running for the Supreme Court in part because there are no other judges with Commonwealth Court experience on the bench.

“I think I provide a new voice, a new perspective on the court,” Brobson said. “I think a lot of people in Pennsylvania want to have faith in their Supreme Court in particular, to protect their rights and hold government accountable to the law.”

Brobson is from Lycoming County and worked with a Pittsburgh-based law firm in Harrisburg before becoming a judge on the Commonwealth Court. He said many of his clients were people and businesses that wanted to do business with government agencies.

He previously ran for Supreme Court in 2009, and visits the fair to make connections with local people and farmers. He announced his candidacy for the Supreme Court and started his campaign in January.

Brobson said that he has worked on many cases relating to farming and agriculture, from the perspective of an attorney and as a judge. He said he wants to see more cases related to farming in the Supreme Court.

“Government regulation has a substantial impact on our family farms, and we need to make sure we have somebody on the court who understands that,” he said.

Aside from farming issues, Brobson said he wants to improve the compensation system for the unemployed.

Another one of Brobson's goals for the Supreme Court would be ensuring appellants know they have a fair shot in cases involving government.

“I hope to elevate the respect to the Supreme Court,” he said. “I think making sure government follows the law is something that everybody in Pennsylvania can get behind.”
