ATV crash traps 9-year-old
Emergency crews responded late Friday to an all-terrain vehicle crash involving a trapped 9-year-old boy in Lancaster Township.
Around 9:57 p.m. Friday, Butler County 911 dispatchers called fire and EMS crews to the area of 635 Yellow Creek Road for an ATV crash involving a child, who may have a broken leg.
According to Harmony Fire Chief Scott Garing, firefighters arriving on the scene found the terrain difficult to navigate.
“It was up a hill and in the woods,” Garing said. “We called for help with a ATV to get access.”
Harmony requested the ATV from the Prospect Fire Department, who then assisted, along with a medic unit from Cranberry Township EMS.
Firefighters said the 9-year-old boy was trapped under a Polaris Ranger in the woods behind the home.
First aid was administered by EMS while firefighters worked to move the vehicle off the boy using high-lift jacks and cribbing.
“We used the lifting devices to lift it up and off them,” Garing said.
In the meantime, a landing zone was being set up nearby for a medical helicopter. Once free of the crash, firefighters used their own ATV to take the boy to the medical helicopter, which then flew him to a Pittsburgh hospital.
The boy's condition is unknown.
Emergency crews cleared the scene about 2 hours and 15 minutes after the initial call.
