Major repair scheduled for Cranberry Twp. road
CRANBERRY TWP — Despite the name, drivers won't find much fresh corn on Freshcorn Road the week of July 19.
Instead, they'll probably find workers removing trees, improving sightlines and reclaiming the asphalt — and, of course, plenty of detour signs.
Township engineer Mike Malak told supervisors last week that township work crews will begin working on Freshcorn just north of Kingstone Avenue in the Madison Heights development the week of July 19, requiring temporary road closures and a detour through part of Jackson Township.
With a closure expected to last three days, the improvement project consists of full-depth reconstruction of the roadway with “improvements to both the road width and vertical geometry,” a township engineering memo stated.
As part of the project, crews will remove trees and improve the line of sight at Glen Rape Road. Because of the closure, Malak said, the township will detour motorists to Zehner School Road in Jackson Township, to Route 19 and to Heights Drive. Residents will continue to have access at all times.
Township manager Dan Santoro said he was impressed by the economic efficiency with which township engineers approached the project. Some years ago, the township received an estimate for $500,000. Cranberry crews will do this year's work, having spent roughly $66,000 on road aggregate, asphalt and equipment rental.
“Approaching it the way we are — using our own forces, renting out only what we need — has really made this project cost-effective,” he said. “It'll be a brand-new road.”
On July 10, there will be a rolling road closure on Unionville Road to accommodate a 5K race. Santoro said the closure likely would last about 20 minutes.
