Moraine concession stand 'not viable,' set for future demolition

Moraine State Park has plans to demolish the vacant building that used to house restaurants and vendors on the North Shore near the marina. The structure was determined to be “in too bad a shape,” according to park manager Dustin Drew.

After sitting vacant for about two decades, a building that once held restaurants and a concession stand at Moraine State Park is set for demolition.

The building is near the marina on the North Shore, and park manager Dustin Drew said it has fallen into disrepair.

“It is not in great shape as a building, and it continues to degrade,” Drew said. “We have examined it and thought long and hard about what it could be used for, but it's just in too bad a shape.”

Throughout the building's history, it operated as a concession stand for the marina and housed a few restaurants. Drew said Moraine always owned the building, and it was contracted out to vendors to operate for seasonal programs.

Drew has talked about the possibilities for the structure with local and state park officials. He said Slippery Rock University had pitched the idea of turning the building into an outdoor classroom, but plans never solidified.

Moraine administrators and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources administrators ultimately decided it would not be financially sustainable to restore the building, both because of its disrepair and location.

“From my understanding, it has always been the location,” Drew said. “It is too far away from the major highways to be viable.”

The building has been in talks for demolition for some time, but Drew said the park recently acquired funding from the DCNR to complete the project.

Drew said the park also acquired the necessary permits for the demolition, but a date has not yet been set.
