Zelie Patriotic Porch Tour's kickoff event postponed

In this June 2021 picture, the front door of the Passavant House in Zelienople is adorned with two flags. One is the current flag that is appropriate in 2021. The one on the right is the 15 star flag represents the flag that was in use when the Passavant House was built in 1808.This flag was in use from 1795-1818. Presidents George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison served under this flag.

The Zelienople Historical Society's kickoff event for its Patriotic Porch Tour has been rescheduled to July 8 due to the weather forecast.

The "Patriotic Porch "tour of homes" will continue as planned from July 1 through July 8, but the kickoff planned for the first day of the event will instead be held as a grand finale next week.

The historical society's tour is billed as an event to unite the borough in a spirit of patriotism around Independence Day.

For a week beginning on Thursday, residents and visitors can tour town, view the registered houses and businesses and vote for their favorite decorations, making sure to return their ballots by July 8. Those who wish to decorate, but have not registered to participate, are not barred from dressing their property in red, white and blue.

The grand finale event will feature a hot dog picnic dinner at 4 p.m. with festivities to follow starting at 6 p.m. at the Passavant House grounds.

The “Program of Patriotism" will include a 21-gun salute, a flag-folding ceremony and visits by George Washington, Abe Lincoln and Betsy Ross re-enactors.

On July 9, the society will judge the winners based on the ballot selections. Four prizes are available with the first-, second- and third-place properties receiving monetary prizes and a fourth selection receiving the “People's Choice” award.
