South Butler OKs upgrades, budget without tax increase

Property owners in the South Butler County School District will not see a tax increase next year.

The school board Wednesday night voted 8-1 to approve a $36.9 million final budget for the 2021-22 school year. The millage rate next year will remain at 94.275.

About $600,000 in emergency relief grant funds are being earmarked for the general fund.

The district avoided a financial hit this year by tapping savings that had been planned for a significant district-wide renovation project to cover charter school tuition the district had to pay due to families using those schools during the pandemic.

Board member George Zacherl voted against the budget.

Also at Wednesday's school board meeting, expenditures for new clocks, security doors and flooring in three rooms at the intermediate elementary school were approved.

Dobil Laboratories will install modern analog clocks to replace the antiquated models throughout the school at a cost of $11,810.

A.G. Mauro Company will install metal doors leading outside from the nurse's office and principal's office at a cost of $11,415.

Doctor Tile will install tile in rooms 101 and 105 and carpet in room 103, which is the music room, for $11,509.

A potential additional expense of up to $15,000 was added to the flooring contract in case floor leveling is needed in the three rooms, said David Foley, superintendent.

New cameras will replace the older models inside and outside the buildings in the district for $391,000.

The cameras will be paid for through two grants received by the district, Foley said.
