Fleeing, 8 traffic charges filed against Butler man
A Butler man who allegedly successfully fled from police in April now faces a felony charge.
State police filed charges Wednesday against Donovan T. Barnes, 20, of Butler, including fleeing from police and eight traffic-related offenses.
Barnes has been in Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail for different charges filed May 13, which included possessing a firearm without a license to carry.
According to charging documents, police encountered Barnes around 11:06 p.m. April 5 on Mercer Road in Center Township. Police said he was driving a white Chevrolet Malibu, and police clocked the car driving at about 66 mph in a 55-mph zone.
Police said they caught up with the Malibu, which then crossed a line on the road, prompting the officer to start a traffic stop.
“Upon approaching the vehicle, I could clearly see the male operator of the vehicle in the driver-side, rear-view mirror,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit. “Before I could make contact with the driver, the vehicle fled the scene.”
The officer rushed back to the vehicle and began pursuit, which moved onto North Main Street, then merged onto Route 422 East. The Malibu exited at Jefferson Street in Butler, took a left onto Route 68 north, and made one last turn onto Thorn Run Road.
“I terminated pursuit for safety concerns,” the officer said. “Throughout the pursuit, the vehicle made multiple unsafe lane changes and unsafe turns without an appropriate signal as well as causing multiple vehicles to have to maneuver to avoid a collision.”
Police said throughout the chase the Malibu was traveling at speeds in excess of 110 mph, well beyond the range of posted speed limits between 35 mph and 55 mph.
According to police, a check of the vehicle’s registration informed them the Malibu belonged to Barnes’ girlfriend, and by searching Barnes’ credentials, they found his license was suspended.
Police said when they made contact with Barnes by phone, he initially told officers he was with friends.
“When asked why he fled the scene, Barnes began to reply, then hung up the phone,” police said.
A preliminary hearing has yet to be scheduled, but the charges were filed through the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
