Truck tips over, injuring and hospitalizing its driver

A Pennsylvania State Police officer investigates the scene of an overturned truck at Wiest Asphalt Products & Paving Tuesday afternoon. The truck driver was transported by Saxonburg Ambulance to the Butler Hospital, where the driver was transported by a LifeFlight helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.

A tri-axle dump truck was emptying its load at Wiest Asphalt Products & Paving in Summit Township on Tuesday afternoon, but the incline it parked on caused it to tip over and injure its driver.

Pete Gall, president and first lieutenant of Lick Hill Volunteer Fire Department, said the driver of the Wiest-owned truck was first transported to Butler Memorial Hospital and from there via LifeFlight to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The extent of his injuries was not known.

“He came down a little too far on the right on the makeshift road, and it's just sand and gravel, so he tipped over on that,” Gall said. “They did (transport) him to Butler Hospital, probably out of precaution, because he was alert and talking. Nobody knew if he lost consciousness at any point.”Gall said the truck was on its side and took some damage from the fall, but it could possibly still be driven.A crew with Wiest was working on getting it upright as the first responder departments wrapped up at the scene, he said.In addition to Lick Hill, East Butler Volunteer Fire Department, Butler Township Volunteer Fire District, State Police and Saxonburg Ambulance responded to the scene.
