State GOP wants redistricting lawsuit tossed
The state Republican Party on Tuesday aimed to have the state Commonwealth Court throw out a lawsuit filed by state Democrats with regard to the state's decennial redistricting process.
In a proposed application for extraordinary relief, filed Tuesday, the Republican Party of Pennsylvania asked the state's second-highest court for permission to intervene in a lawsuit filed by 16 Democratic voters that aims to have the court draw the commonwealth's new congressional district map, should the state's political branches not come to an agreement.The state Republican Party's filing, written in part by Butler attorney Tom King, who serves as the party's counsel, says the state GOP will seek to have the court toss out the lawsuit on the grounds that the petitioners who filed it lack standing and failed to sue indispensable parties to the case.“Petitioners' (sic) claims are speculative in nature based upon events that have not yet occurred and may never occur and, as such, petitioners have not been injured or damaged,” the filing states in part.<b> The full story will publish in tomorrow's edition of the Butler Eagle and on butlereagle.com.
