Members of Boy Scout Troop 58 of Mars placed flags on the graves of veterans Saturday morning in Mars Cemetery, Treesdale Cemetery and Glade Run Cemetery.

The project, in anticipation of Memorial Day on Monday, was carried out as a service for the Mars Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Jenny Webb, an adult member of the troop, said the boys also replaced missing veteran grave markers, straightened crooked markers and researched the graves of veterans who were buried in the past two years but have not been marked as veterans.

Webb said Mars VFW officials allowed the scout troop to meet at their building in Adams Township after being told they could not meet at Glade Run Church, the boys’ usual meeting place, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The troop began meeting at the Mars VFW in October.

“It allowed the boys to meet all winter and to work on rank advancement and other activities,” Webb said.
