Fires break out in woods Thursday
Firefighters with the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department used utility terrain vehicles to fight a fire spreading in a wooded area Thursday afternoon.
Rick Craig, safety officer with the department, said the cause of the fire has not been confirmed, but it started spreading near train tracks around 1132 Chicora Road at 12:49 p.m.
“It was in the woods above Chicora Road. It was moving up the grade pretty good,” Craig said. “The front was advancing pretty quickly up the hill, so we stretched lines into the woods to cut it off.”
While Chicora fought the fire on Chicora Road alongside Bruin VFD, other departments responded to a separate fire nearby on Gameland Road. A dispatcher with Butler County said volunteer fire departments from Petrolia, Lick Hill, Oneida Valley and East Butler responded to the fires on Gameland Road.
Craig said it took several hours to have the fire near Chicora Road completely contained, and it burned between two to three acres.
