The county commissioners on Wednesday:

Heard Mike Handley, president of the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance, request a donation of trash and recycling receptacles for the 10th annual Connoquenessing Creek Cleanup events. Handley said the cleanups have removed 627,000 pounds of trash from the Connoquenessing Creek, plus more than 7,200 tires, over the past decade. This year’s cleanups will be held Aug. 28 and Sept. 11. The commissioners did not take action on the request Wednesday, but have helped the group’s efforts in the past.

Approved a measure for the county Housing and Redevelopment Authority to serve as the fiduciary agency for a $1 million grant toward the construction of a new building at the Steamfitters Local 449 campus in Jackson Township. Mark Gordon, the county chief of economic development and planning, said the $3 million expansion project is underway. The motion passed with the contingency that the agreement is reviewed by the county solicitor.

Approved consulting services for the upgrade of three elevators at the county government center. The consultant, VDA, will be paid $19,000 to determine the work needed, handle the bidding process and oversee the work as it is completed. The upgrade project on the elevators is to be finished by June 23.

Approved the application for an Emergency Management Performance Grant through the state Emergency Management Agency that would pay 50% of the salaries of Steve Bicehouse, emergency services director, and Amy Murray, emergency planner.

Approved a measure to pay jurors with a debit card instead of cash or a check. The debit cards will cost the county 55 cents per juror, which is less expensive than using paper checks, envelopes and postage.

Heard Catherine Lalonde, the county Democratic Committee chairwoman, request that sample ballots on the county’s election bureau website be kept up to date in the future. She said the primary election sample ballots online were not fully updated as late as May 11.
