George M. Deer

George M. “Jay” Deer, 94, formerly of Richland Township, Gibsonia, died peacefully on April 8, 2021, surrounded by family.

Born in Butler, he was the son of the late George M. Sr. and Catharine (Percy) Deer.

He was the beloved husband of Helen M. (Peffer) Deer; the father of Dennis J. (Mary Anne) Deer of Galveston, Texas, Mary L. Deer of Genesee, Pa., and Karen S. Young of Pinebluff, N.C.; the brother of Charles R. Deer of Fairbanks, Alaska; the grandfather to Deborah Wisnoiwski, Daniel Deer, Amy Yanick, Timothy Deer and Megan Lenz, and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Audrey Thomas of Butler and two brothers, William Deer of Wisconsin and Darrell Deer of Florida.

Jay spent his career with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and was a longtime member of Bakerstown United Methodist Church and the Pennsylvania Dairy Sanitarian Association.

He loved to hunt, sail, spend time outdoors, help family and friends and build picnic tables. He was the quintessential family man.

DEER — Friends of George M. “Jay” Deer, who died Thursday, April 8, 2021, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Schellhaas Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 5864 Heckert Road, Bakerstown.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Bakerstown United Methodist Church.

Interment will follow in Brownsdale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in George’s memory to Northern Tier Library at www.northerntierlibrary.org, or Bakerstown United Methodist Church at www.bakerstownumc.org.
