Supportive Program
Twenty-six students at South Butler Primary School participated in a celebratory assembly Friday.
They were being recognized through the district's School-Wide Positive Behavior Support program, which rewards students for following the “Four Bs” — Be safe, be respectful, be responsible and be productive.
“When kids are caught doing a nice job with one of those things, they get a golden ticket,” said Greg Mandalas, the school's principal. “Our goal is to recognize every student in the school at some point.”
The students who went to the assembly got to race the principal in the gymnasium, which was one of the SPBS rewards.
The school implemented SPBS at the beginning of the school year, and Mandalas said it has not only incentivized good behavior in students, but it has also led to a reduction of bad behavior, according to Mandalas.
“Since we've implemented the program, discipline calls have gone down dramatically,” Mandalas said.
Mandalas said about 80% of students have been rewarded through SPBS, but he and the school administration aim to recognize the remaining 20% by the end of the year.
