First egg hatches at Hays eagle nest

The first egg hatched at the Hays Bald Eagle nest Tuesday. The egg was laid Feb. 12, and the eaglet started to break through the shell Sunday.

According to the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, bald eagle eggs hatch after 35 days. Two more eggs in the nest, which were laid Feb. 15 and Feb. 19, should be hatching in the next few weeks.

The eagle pair at the nest have successfully raised 12 birds since they started nesting in the area near the Monongahela River in 2013.

A webcam has been set up at their current nest about 5 miles outside of downtown Pittsburgh. The Hays webcam is a collaborative project between PixCams and Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and runs 24/7. The live video feed has been granted a special permit by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for educational purposes. You can watch the feed at http://assets.butlereagle.com/PitEagle/index.html.
