Power outage affects traffic, businesses on Main Street
Although the sun was finally shining, many downtown employees started their Wednesday morning in the dark.
A two-hour power outage around 8 a.m. affected Main Street in Butler from Jefferson Street south and a few blocks to the west to Chestnut Street.
Todd Meyers, West Penn Power spokesman, said a fuse blew at the Diamond Street substation near Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park.
About 700 customers were affected.
Crews responded to reset the fuse, and power was returned to all customers by about 9:45 a.m., Meyers said.
Motorists in the area of the outage used the blinking red or yellow traffic lights to navigate the streets during the outage.
Most downtown homes and businesses north of the Jefferson Street intersection and streets to the east of Main Street were not affected.
Catherine Jenkins, a barista at Cummings Candy and Coffee on Main Street, said employees sold candy and the coffee they had already prepared, but closed once the coffee supply ran out.
She said partial power returned to the shop during the outage, which provided dim lighting, but was not enough to power their espresso or coffee machines.
Meyers said partial power can occur, depending on the number of electric lines a building needs to operate its electrical equipment.
“The lights might be dimmer, and equipment might not run correctly because it's not getting the right voltage,” he said.
Jenkins said all customers were sent to the Cummings location on Route 8 in Penn Township during the outage.
Jeannie Bowen, VITA coordinator, said the volunteer tax preparers set up at the Center for Community Resources office on Main Street used laptops during the outage.
“We're using laptops, cellphones and flashlights,” Bowen said. “We're doing taxes, so we just keep moving.”
The businesses and traffic lights were back up and running after crews reset the fuse.
