Police shoot suspect in reported assault
State police on Saturday identified the suspect fatally shot by New Wilmington Police last week, which is still under investigation.
A New Wilmington Police officer on Thursday fatally shot Juan Carter Hernandez, 33, of Campbell, Ohio, who was allegedly assaulting a transgender woman, according to a state police report.
The state police from the New Castle barracks responded to 524 S. New Castle St., New Wilmington, Lawrence County, to assist the New Wilmington Police Department with an officer-involved shooting.
According to the state police report, a preliminary investigation has determined the New Wilmington officer arrived at a suspected crime scene to find a man assaulting a 24-year-old transgender woman with a blunt instrument.
The victim has since been identified as Chyna Carrillo of Springdale, Ark., who had moved to New Wilmington earlier in the year, according to multiple news reports.
The police report said the officer issued commands for the Hernandez to stop, but the man continued to beat the woman.
“The male suspect continued to assault the victim, at which time the New Wilmington police officer discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect,” said the investigating officer in the report.
According to the report, Carrillo was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Police said Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a New Castle News report, the borough has placed the officer on administrative leave as standard practice when an officer is involved in a shooting incident.
