Rowena Carrier
Rowena J. Carrier, 84, formerly of Cabot, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
She had resided with her daughter Joan since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, Rowena moved to Concordia in 2018 after selling her family homestead in Sarver, where she lived most of her life and raised her family.
Rowena was born in New Kensington on June 3, 1936, and was the eldest daughter of the late Mary M. (Huth) Zimmerman and Robert R. Zimmerman. Rowena was a member of St. Mary, Mother of God Church in Freeport, where she had been the organist for many years.
After raising her family of seven children Rowena obtained her medical certificate. She was then employed at Westinghouse along with her husband, Gary, until they both retired in 1994. She had also worked for many years with the Kroger Co. and part-time at the old Freeport Hardware Store. Rowena cherished her family and loved spending time with them. She also enjoyed sewing, beach vacations, and playing piano.
Rowena is survived by her children, William (Linda) Carrier, of Sarver, LuAnn (Ted) Keener, of Sarver, Daniel (Dawn) Carrier, of Masontown, W.Va., Teri Jo Carrier, of Pittsburgh, Joan (Douglas) Hilliard, of Butler, John (Jodi) Carrier, of Industry, and Michael Carrier, of Saxonburg. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving are cousins, numerous nieces and nephews, and a brother-in-law, Ronald André of Mesa Ariz. She also leaves behind her dog, Gibbs.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Gary in 2003, who was her high school sweetheart. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Bobby Zimmerman, Carol André, Florence Oberdick, Maureen Banks; and brothers-in-law, Leonard Oberdick and James Banks.
Carrier — At the family’s request there will be no public visitation for Rowena J. Carrier, who died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Mary, Mother of God Church in Freeport and burial was held in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Freeport.
Arrangements are under the direction of Redmond Funeral Home, 524 High St., Freeport.
