Warrant issued for Cranberry man after chase

Middlesex Township Police have issued an arrest warrant for a Cranberry Township man who allegedly led them on a chase for about one mile on Jan. 14.

The warrant was issued last week for Matthew A. Metcalf, 31, stemming from a felony charge of fleeing from an officer.

Metcalf also was charged with three misdemeanors, which include a first-offense DUI, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Two summary traffic violations also were included.

Police said they were pursuing a lead about someone driving dangerously in the southbound lane of Route 8, when they found a red 2012 Ford Fusion driving in the center-turning lane near Denny Road.

The charging officer tried to initiate a stop near Mike's Towing on Pittsburgh Road.

“The vehicle failed to stop for my emergency lights and sirens,” said the officer in the affidavit.

After a little more than a mile south on Route 8, the vehicle pulled onto the parking lot of Porkside Grill, which is in Allegheny County. The criminal complaint did not specify how fast the car was moving, nor how quickly the officer drove in pursuit.

“I had the driver throw the keys out the window of the vehicle and to remain seated with his hands in the air as I approached the vehicle,” said the officer in the affidavit.

The documents said after exiting the car, Metcalf allegedly acted and looked impaired, including “sweating profusely” even though the temperature was 38 degrees outside.

According to the documents, the officer asked Metcalf for his driver's license, which Metcalf could not produce. Police said they asked Metcalf to search the vehicle for the ID, and he agreed to do so. The officer said he found his wallet on the passenger seat.

“As soon as I opened the wallet to gather his driver's license, I observed three stamp bags of heroin in the wallet,” the officer said.

Police said they also performed field sobriety tests on Metcalf, after which he was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI.

According to the documents, en route to UPMC Passavant Cranberry for a blood draw, Metcalf lost consciousness, and the officer was advised to take him to Quality EMS, where a team was standing by.

The documents state a paramedic informed the officer that Naloxone had to be administered to Metcalf, and Quality then drove him to the hospital.

Police said Metcalf's toxicology reports showed he had fentanyl and norfentanyl in his system.

According to documents, police advised Metcalf of his rights and interviewed him.

“He told me that he purchased (the heroin) in Butler city at the Marathon gas station on Main Street,” said the officer in the affidavit. “Metcalf then stated he snorted two bags of heroin.”

Court documents show a preliminary arraignment has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, and that Metcalf has acquired attorney Laura Gutnick of Pittsburgh.
