Valentine's balloons pose risk to grid
West Penn Power officials are requesting that those celebrating Valentine’s Day on Sunday keep their heart-shaped foil balloons “tethered, Earth-bound and under control.”
Todd Meyers, senior communications representative with West Penn Power, said that last year flyaway foil balloons were to blame for 132 power outages across the six-state service area of FirstEnergy, West Penn Power’s parent company.
FirstEnergy responded to 355 balloon-related power outages in the last three years, Meyers said, with 36 being in West Penn Power territory.
Weighting balloons and puncturing them once the celebration has ended are tips offered by FirstEnergy to keep the power on during and after Valentine’s Day.
