Police arrest 16-year-olds in garage burglary case

Two 16-year-old boys are accused of taking property from a garage in Winfield Township. Some suspected stolen items later were found at the home of one of the teens.

State police arrested the youths Saturday in connection with the incident at the home on Riemer Road.

The young defendants — one from the Saxonburg area and the other from the Sarver area — are charged in juvenile complaints with a lone felony, burglary. Police said the teens also are charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

Authorities did not identify the defendants, who appeared by video for detention hearings Monday. One boy was ordered held at a secured detention facility, and the other at an unsecured facility.

The teens are accused of entering the garage and taking tools and miscellaneous items. During the investigation, police said they obtained surveillance video taken by security cameras at the home.

Troopers later responded to one of the suspects' homes, where they recovered several unspecified stolen items.

The boys are to next appear for pre-adjudication conferences Feb. 18.

A pre-adjudication conference is similar to a status conference in adult court. At that conference, each defendant will have the option to fight the charges at a later adjudication hearing, the equivalent of a trial in adult court, or admit to charges — similar to a guilty plea.

Police, meanwhile, are asking residents and business owners from the Saxonburg, Sarver and surrounding areas to contact them at 724-284-8100 if they noticed items missing.
