Penguins hire new GM

The team hired former Philadelphia Flyer goaltender and general manager Ron Hextall as the team's general manager on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021.
New director of hockey ops also hired

The Pittsburgh Penguins have filled the void left by general manager Jim Rutherford’s resignation in a big way.

The club has hired Brian Burke, 65, as director of hockey operations and Ron Hextall, 56, as general manager. A press conference was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Burke has spent 31 years as an NHL executive, including a stint as general manager with the Anaheim Ducks during their Stanley Cup season of 2006-07.

Hextall was a longtime goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers who also served as that franchise’s general manager for four seasons. He has 20 years of experience as an NHL executive and was assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Kings during their 2012 Stanley Cup championship season.
