Roads are slick and slippery across Butler County thanks to overnight snow that brought between one to three inches of the white stuff.

The county is part of a regional winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. The advisory is in effect until 1 p.m. today with additional snow accumulation of two to three inches

Most school districts have switched to all remote instruction for the day. As of 7 a.m., the lone exceptions were the Moniteau and Slippery Rock school districts, which were both on a two-hour delay due to the inclement weather.

There have been only one or two minor wrecks including one a little before 6 a.m. on Dinnerball Road near Victory Road in Jefferson Township. There were no immediate reports of injuries but state police were called.

“There haven't any accidents really, just people getting stuck everywhere,” said a dispatcher at the county's 911 center. One of the recent stranded motorists was on Browns Hill Road in Middlesex Township.

PennDOT began treating roads about 11 p.m. Monday and full crews are on duty. In all, 38 trucks are out hitting the roads, said Brent Piccola, assistant county manager for PennDOT District 10 in Butler.

The snowfall was not unexpected.

“Down south is getting hit harder,” he said. “Up north, it's not as bad.”

Piccola said roads are a mix of snow- or slush-covered, and “some are just wet.”

He expected a let up within the next two hours or so, with precipitation tapering to flurries.

The weather service is predicting another system after 1 p.m. Wednesday that could dump an additional inch or two in the county by early Thursday.
