Pregnant woman injured in weekend crash
JEFFERSON TWP — A woman several months pregnant was injured Sunday morning in a rollover crash on Bonniebrook Road in Jefferson Township, authorities said.
The 23-year-old woman from Slippery Rock suffered an apparent minor hand injury in the 7:15 a.m. wreck blamed on slippery roads. A passerby helped get her out of her sport utility vehicle.
She was taken by Saxonburg Ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital. Her condition was not known. State police are investigating but an accident report was not immediately available.
The woman was traveling south on Bonniebrook Road toward Route 356 when her GMC Terrain slid on the snow-covered road, hitting and shearing off a utility pole, police said. She told authorities that she was headed for work in suburban Pittsburgh.
The vehicle ended on its driver's side in the southbound lane. Saxonburg volunteer firefighters had to close a portion of the road. The woman, who was wearing a seat belt, apparently used a drill or some other tool to break the windshield in an effort to get out of the vehicle, emergency crews said. Neighbors said a Good Samaritan came by and assisted her in getting out the back of the SUV.Ed Lehnerd, who lives nearby on Route 356, also known as North Pike Road, had just gotten up and was getting his morning's first cup of coffee when he heard the crash.“That sound is starting to get familiar,” Lehnerd said. He noted there have been other crashes on the same stretch of road in recent years.“I looked quick and saw (the crash) and hollered to the wife to call 911,” he said. “We then looked out and saw a guy out there already. He got her out the back and brought her to his car.”Crews said the woman's airbags deployed. The SUV was later towed.
