Cranberry Twp. man faces 2 felony charges

Fails to register as sex offender

A Cranberry Township man is in prison following his arrest for failing to register as a sex offender.

Stephen L. Manning, 73, is charged with two felony counts of failure to comply with Megan's Law registration requirements. He was arraigned on charges Wednesday and placed in the Butler County Prison. He was given a recognizance bond on the charges, but is in prison on a probation violation.Cranberry Township police last week began their investigation after Manning allegedly did not appear at a required site to register or verify his personal information with state police between Dec. 26 and Jan. 4.Defendants convicted of certain offenses, under state law, are required to be placed on the Megan's Law registry of sex offenders, which is maintained and posted online by state police.Offenders are required to regularly update or verify their registry information like their address, employment, phone numbers and vehicles.Due to the severity of the crime that Manning was convicted of in 2017, the sexual assault of a young girl in Cranberry Township more than two decades earlier, he is required to be on the list for the rest of his life.Investigators said that Manning last registered or verified his information to authorities on Oct. 9, when he traveled to Florida.Police arrested him at his home Tuesday. His preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 19. Online court records did not indicate if he has an attorney.
