Firefighters pulled the body of a small child from a Knox Avenue home that was fully engulfed in flames on Thursday.

Butler Joint Fire Chief Chris Switala confirmed the death of the child as well as the hospitalization of two other children and one adult male, none of whom have been identified.

“The fire was throughout the whole house on the interior,” Switala said.

Crews attacked the blaze with streams of water and entered the home to retrieve the child’s body.

The two other children were taken to unspecified hospitals for burns and smoke inhalation, one by ambulance and another by medical helicopter. The adult male was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital to be treated for the same conditions.

Butler County 911 dispatchers at 11:58 a.m. called multiple fire crews to the fire at 127 Knox Ave., a property owned by Jeremy and Hollie Oesterling.

“They updated, saying a reported child entrapment,” Switala said. “Initial responders attacked the fire. They made entry and pulled one victim from the second story.”

Butler city, township and VA fire departments responded to the call. Butler City Police also assisted at the scene. The Butler County Coroner’s Office transported the child’s body from the scene.

Switala said the fire was under control around 1:15 p.m. He said the home was engulfed when fire crews arrived, and that made fighting the blaze difficult.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

A Butler State Police fire marshal was called to investigate. Switala said state police will take the lead on the investigation because of the fatality.

In addition to the injuries, the home sustained heavy damages and was designated as a total loss, according to Switala.

A neighboring home only a few feet from the fire also sustained melted siding. Switala said the neighbors were not home at the time of the fire, and the damage was only on the exterior.
