Show some respect; cover your face

Jack Cohen

COVID-19 cases continue to surge, our hospitals are at capacity and things will get worse before they get better.

It’s hard to understand why anyone would question the simple request to wear a mask. People are dying, and our businesses are suffering. It’s no secret our world has changed, and we now must adapt to a new way of life.

The mission of Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau is to promote Butler County as an attractive tourism, sports and business destination. Our area is filled with many locally-owned and operated businesses. If people don’t follow the simple guidelines put forth from the CDC, our community and the businesses in it suffer the consequences.

When people walk into a business without a mask on, it shows a complete lack of respect, not only to the people around them, but to that business owner as well. We all need to do our part to help keep our businesses open because their livelihood depends on us.

The Tourism Bureau represents over 400 local businesses and organizations. Our tourism members and the well-being of the community are at the forefront of our agenda. We are disheartened about the impact the coronavirus has had on our businesses, and we feel it is necessary to follow procedure and be proactive in protecting the citizens of Butler County.

People need to wear their masks, avoid large gatherings, wash their hands, clean surfaces, practice social distancing and avoid noncritical activities where social distancing or masking is not possible. I don’t think it’s asking too much.

The tourism industry is strong and resilient — we have made it through previous crises, and we will make it through this one, too. Please do your part by wearing a mask and practice social distancing.

Jack Cohen is president of the Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau.
