Mars girls soccer best team ever in county

Kudos to West Allegheny and Seneca Valley girls soccer.

Those two teams did something nobody else could do over the past two years: Do something against the Mars girls soccer team.

West Allegheny scored two goals against the Planets this year. The rest of their schedule scored three.

Seneca Valley played Mars to a 3-3 tie last season. The rest of the Planets’ opponents took a loss.

Many of them by wide margins.

If you are looking for the greatest high school athletic team in Butler County history — and the most decorated senior class — look no further.

Mars girls soccer is it.

Consider these numbers:

Since Sept. 17, 2017 — when Mars dropped a 4-1 decision to Upper St. Clair — the Planets have gone 46-0-1 in regular season play.

The 2019 Lady Planets were 22-0-1, out-scoring the opposition 95-8 in the regular season, 36-2 in the playoffs, while winning the WPIAL and PIAA championships.

The 2020 Lady Planets found a way to top that. They went 19-0 on the year, out-scoring the opposition 73-5 in the regular season, 38-0 in the playoffs, while winning the WPIAL and PIAA championships.

Those two dominant seasons back to back at the district and state levels are unprecedented. They put Mars girls soccer at the top of the county’s all-time list of athletic greatness.

Can’t be denied. Can’t even be challenged.

And how about this senior class of Ellie Coffield, Ellie Howell, Gracie Dunaway, Caroline Wroblewski, Samantha King, Kara Rocco, Erin Rodgers, Alexandra King and Courtney Lisman?

Granted, not all of these girls saw action as freshmen, but the program’s four-year record during their time at Mars is simply crazy.

Two state championships. Two WPIAL championships. Two other appearances in the WPIAL tile game, both resulting in one-goal losses. A composite record of 77 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie.

Again, simply the best.

Some of those girls will go on to play soccer in college. Others have played their final game.

All have realized lifetime memories on the soccer pitch.

And to think, they achieved what they did this year with their male counterparts matching them stride for stride, culminating with an incredible Friday night in Hershey.

Oh, yeah, they rolled to further state glory this year in the middle of a pandemic.

We should all appreciate history — especially when it unfolds before our very eyes.

The message Mars’ seniors left the underclassmen on the girls soccer team is clear.

Top this.
