Police officer injured while directing traffic Saturday

PENN TWP — A police officer directing traffic was injured Saturday night when a sport utility vehicle struck him on Route 8 near Powell Road, authorities said.

Patrolman Bryan Costanzo suffered an apparent minor injury that did not require immediate treatment in the incident about 9 p.m. that followed President Donald Trump's campaign rally at the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport in Penn Township.

The officer was working a traffic control detail with state police at the intersection with Powell Road, the location of one of the remote parking lots being used for rally-goers.

Troopers had shut down both southbound lanes of Route 8 and Costanzo was closing both northbound lanes to allow cars and buses out of Powell Road, police said.

A 72-year-old Center Township man was driving the SUV toward the officer, who was dressed in a neon green safety vest, in the left northbound lane.

The officer's cruiser was parked in the turning lane, police said, with the rear lighting activated and flares next to the cruiser. Costanzo moved but he was unable to avoid being struck in the turning lane.

Police said the SUV's front driver's side bumper hit the officer's left knee and left arm. The vehicle was believed to be traveling 15 to 20 mph. Costanzo reported a sore elbow after the wreck.

The motorist told police that he did not see the officer. Police did not immediately identify the man, who will be cited.
