Roofer injured in third-floor fall

A roofer was injured Tuesday morning when he fell from the third floor of an Adams Township townhouse, authorities said.

A medical helicopter later flew the man, believed to be in his late-20s or early-30s, to a Pittsburgh hospital. The extent of his injuries was unknown.

Emergency crews were called around 8:15 a.m. to Northglen Court, which is part of the Treesdale plan, where a member of a roofing crew reportedly fell about 25 feet off the roof of one of the townhomes there.

One of his co-workers told rescuers that the man fell from the third floor on the rear of the home and landed on the banister on the first-floor balcony, before hitting the ground, said Jeremy Nickl, a lieutenant with the Adams Area Fire District.

The injured roofer was semiconscious and unable to speak, Nickl said. He was moaning in pain. The only visible injuries were scrapes on his knees.

Volunteer firefighters helped set up a landing zone for a STAT MedEvac helicopter, which landed around 8:45 a.m. at the Mars Veterans of Foreign Wars post home on Mars Valencia Road.

A Quality Ambulance crew tended to the man, placing him in a neck collar and on a backboard before he was driven to the VFW and flown to UPMC Presbyterian hospital. Adams Township police also assisted. A call to police was not returned Tuesday.
