'Haunted' Caboose

New caboose along the Butler Freeport Trail in Cabot.

The Butler-Freeport Community Trail Council officially celebrated the trail's latest addition Saturday with the official opening of its mid-20th century railroad caboose. Originally located at Cellar Works Brewing on Route 356, the train car found its new home along the trail access in Cabot.

“We're a rail trail, it sort of makes sense,” trail council president Chris Ziegler joked.

Ziegler championed the efforts to acquire and move the piece of railroad history.

The trail council plans to use the caboose for fundraising for trail projects through weekend concession sales and other events.“It's a neat little thing. I'm glad they bought it,” Freeport resident Sharon Mihalick said following a bike ride. She and her husband, Michael, are regular users of the trail. In the years they've lived in Freeport, she said she's seen the usage of the trail increase dramatically.“It's become very popular,” Mihalick said. “It's very family friendly.”On Saturday trail council volunteers decorated the caboose for Halloween, offering free walk-throughs of the “haunted” caboose.

Bob and Samantha Bennett of Sarver take their nieces Samantha, 8, and Ellie Skocik, 4, and nephew Joshua Skocik, 6, through the “haunted” caboose on the Butler-Freeport Community Trail in Cabot. Volunteers from the trail council celebrated the official opening of the trail's caboose Saturday with Halloween decorations and a public walk-through.
