10 state legislative seats on Nov. 3 ballot

As Election Day approaches on Nov. 3, residents across Butler County have an opportunity to vote on 10 seats in the state legislature.

Senate District 21State Senate District 21 extends into five counties, including all, most or part of Butler, Clarion, Forest, Venango and Warren counties.Incumbent Scott Hutchinson, a Republican from Venango County, has served since 2012. He is the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and vice chairman of the Communications and Technology Committee. He also serves on four other committees.As well as his focus on state spending, Hutchinson also has a focus on infrastructure and law enforcement.Challenger Shelbie Stromyer, a Democrat from Venango County, is a former registered nurse who ran unopposed in the primary election.Stromyer has a strong focus on the environment and health care.4 State Senate District 21 includes Butler City; Callery, Connoquenessing, Evans City, Harrisville, Mars, Prospect, Seven Fields, Slippery Rock, Valencia, West Liberty and West Sunbury boroughs; and Adams, Brady, Butler Center, Cherry, Clay, Connoquenessing, Cranberry, Forward, Franklin, Marion, Mercer, Penn and Slippery Rock townships.

Senate District 41State Senate District 41 extends into four counties, including all, most or part of Armstrong, Butler, Indiana and Westmoreland counties.Incumbent Joe Pittman, a Republican from Indiana County, has served since winning a special election in 2019. Pittman serves as chairman of the Senate Urban Affairs and Housing Committee.Pittman has a focus on the economy, job creation and infrastructure.Challenger Anthony Deloreto, a Democrat from Indiana County, is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and an owner of the Spaghetti Benders restaurant in Indiana.Deloreto has a focus on the economy, education and infrastructure.State Senate District 41 includes Bruin, Chicora, Cherry Valley, East Butler, Eau Claire, Fairview, Karns City, Petrolia and Saxonburg boroughs; and Allegheny, Buffalo, Clearfield, Clinton, Concord, Donegal, Fairview, Jefferson, Middlesex, Oakland, Parker, Summit, Venango, Washington and Winfield townships.

Senate District 47State Senate District 47 extends into three counties, including all, most or part of Butler, Beaver and Lawrence counties.Incumbent Elder Vogel Jr., a Republican from Cranberry Township, has served since 2009.He serves as the chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee. In addition to agriculture, Vogel has a focus on criminal reform, the economy and infrastructure.Challenger Stephen Krizan III, a Democrat from Beaver County, is a truck driver and member of Teamsters Local 341. He is also a volunteer firefighter.Krizan has a focus on unions, education and job creation.State Senate District 47 includes Harmony, Portersville and Zelienople boroughs; and Jackson, Lancaster, Muddy Creek and Worth townships.

House District 8State House District 8 extends into two counties, including all, most or part of Butler and Mercer counties.Incumbent Timothy Bonner, a Republican from Mercer County, has served since winning a special election in 2020. Bonner is also a practicing attorney in Mercer County.Bonner has a focus on state spending, protecting jobs and protecting the Second Amendment as well as the rights of the unborn.Challenger Phil Heasley, a Democrat from Center Township, is a lifelong Butler County resident, who manages his family's business, Butler Gymnastics Club. Heasley ran against Bonner in the special election.Heasley has a focus on education, economic development and health care.State House District 8 includes Harrisville, Portersville, West Liberty and West Sunbury boroughs; and Brady, Center, Cherry, Clay, Franklin, Marion, Mercer, Muddy Creek and Worth townships.

House District 10State House District 10 extends into three counties, including all, most or part of Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties.Incumbent Aaron Bernstine, a Republican from Lawrence County, has served since 2016. He serves on the House Commerce, Insurance, Health and Game and Fisheries committees.Bernstine has a focus on government reform, state spending and the economy.Challenger Kolbe Cole, a Democrat from Beaver County, is a community leader, specializing as an advocate for mental health awareness and character development.Cole has a focus on education, fair representation and sustainable jobs with fair wages.A third candidate will also appear on the ballot for District 10. Johnathan Peffer, a member of the United Party from Lawrence County, is the CEO of his own tech company.Peffer has a focus on bridging the gap between the two parties, including the economy, education and the environment.State House District 10 includes Slippery Rock borough and township.

House District 11State House District 11 encompasses an area entirely in central Butler County.Incumbent Marci Mustello, a Republican from Butler Township, serves on the Agriculture and Rural Affairs; Commerce; Human Services; and Tourism and Recreational Development committees.Mustello has a focus on lowering property taxes, protecting the Second Amendment and the economy.Challenger Sam Doctor, a Democrat from Butler Township, is a crane operator for AK Steel in Butler and an active union member.Doctor has a focus on government reform, protecting the Second Amendment and state spending.State House District 11 includes Butler City; Chicora, Connoquenessing, East Butler, Fairview, Karns City, Petrolia, Prospect and Saxonburg boroughs; and Butler, Clearfield, Connoquenessing, Donegal, Fairview, Jefferson, Oakland and Summit townships.

House District 12State House District 12 encompasses an area entirely in southern Butler County.Incumbent Daryl Metcalfe, a Republican from Cranberry Township, has served since 1999. He is chairman of the Environmental Resources and Energy Committee.Metcalfe has a focus on education, government reform and the Second Amendment.Challenger Dan Smith Jr., a Democrat from Adams Township, has 25 years of experience in the financial industry.Smith has a focus on state spending, education and transportation.A third candidate has announced a write-in campaign. Scott Timko, a Republican from Cranberry Township, has announced a write-in campaign following his loss to Metcalfe in the primary election.Timko has a focus on government reform and protecting the Second Amendment.State House District 12 includes Callery, Mars, Seven Fields and Valencia boroughs; and Adams, Clinton, Cranberry, Forward, Middlesex and Penn townships.

House District 14State House District 14 extends into two counties, including all, most or part of Butler and Beaver counties.Incumbent Jim Marshall, a Republican from Beaver County, has served since 2007. He is chairman of the Gaming Oversight Committee and a member of the Transportation Committee.Challenger Zachary Wilson, a Democrat from Beaver County, is a delivery driver for a global shipping company. He is also a practicing certified-EMT.Wilson has a focus on education, infrastructure and supporting unions.State House District 14 includes Evans City, Harmony and Zelienople boroughs; and Jackson and Lancaster townships.

House District 60State House District 60 extends into three counties, including all, most or part of Butler, Armstrong and Indiana counties.Incumbent Jeff Pyle, a Republican from Armstrong County, has served since 2005. He serves as chairman of the Liquor Control Committee and a member of the Environmental Resources and Energy Committee.Pyle has a focus on job creation and infrastructure.He is running unopposed.State House District 60 includes Buffalo and Winfield townships.

House District 64State House District 64 extends into two counties, including all, most or part of Butler and Venango counties.Incumbent R. Lee James, a Republican from Venango County, has served since 2013. He serves on the Appropriations; Environmental Resources and Energy; and Veteran Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committees, as well as subcommittee chairman on boroughs for the Local Government Committee.James has a focus on infrastructure, sustainable jobs and government reform.Challenger Michael Badges-Canning, a Green Party candidate from Cherry Valley Borough, taught for nearly 30 years at George Junior Republic. He is a founding member of Marcellus Outreach Butler and is involved with the Better Path Coalition and the Pennsylvania Poor People’s Campaign.Badges-Canning has a focus on money in politics, clean drinking water, education funding and protecting civil liberties.State House District 64 includes Bruin, Cherry Valley and Eau Claire boroughs; and Allegheny, Concord, Parker, Venango and Washington townships.
