Butler man charged with chasing teen with knife

Ronald Edwards of Butler, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Butler.

A Butler man was arrested on charges he chased a 16-year-old neighbor boy while holding a knife during a late Saturday incident on West Cunningham Street, city police said. No injuries were reported.

Ronald E. Edwards, 64, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, and child endangerment, a misdemeanor. He is free on $10,000 bail.

Police said they spoke to the boy after his father called to report the alleged assault. The teen told officers that Edwards started to argue with him while they were at an apartment on the 200 block of West Cunningham Street.

The boy said there were several other people at the apartment. He recounted that Edwards punched him in the chest, and he then pushed Edwards back to get away, police said.

While attempting to leave the apartment, according to charging documents, “Edwards pulled a knife out of his back pocket and began to chase him with it in an attempt to stab him in the back.”

Police said they spoke to several witnesses, who apparently corroborated the boy's account.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton later arraigned Edwards on the charges. It was not immediately known if the defendant has an attorney. He could not be reached for comment.
