Shirley J. (Hawk) Roe

Shirley J. (Hawk) Roe, 86, loving wife of the late Thomas W. Roe, passed away on Sept. 15, 2020, at Butler Memorial Hospital.

A longtime resident of Meridian, she is survived by her three daughters, Linda (Russell) Miller of Chaptico, Md., Gail Faurie of Valencia and Sharon (John) Millea of Harmony; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Shirley was born in 1934 in New Kensington to Dean and Dorothy (Wiester) Hawk. She graduated from Butler Area High School in 1952, and married Thomas in 1953.

She was an active member of her community, serving for many years as a 4-H leader for the Powder Mill Trail Riders Club and as a board member, volunteer and contributor to the Butler County Symphony Association.

An avid member of several bridge and 500 card clubs, Shirley also donated her time generously to her place of worship, St. John’s Reformed Church in Meridian.

She was a skilled seamstress and craftswoman, who sold her goods at festivals throughout the region for Country Lane, a small business she co-founded with one of her great friends. Shirley became part-owner and consultant to the Meridian Station Gift Shop and Confectionery, which her husband purchased in 1979 and preserved for the local community.

ROE — Visitation for Shirley J. (Hawk) Roe, who died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020, will be held from 10:30 a.m. until noon Saturday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler. Funeral services will begin at noon.

A private graveside service will follow at Butler County Memorial Park Cemetery.

Due to COVID-19 state guidelines, visitors are required to supply their own facial covering and to wear it along with maintaining social distancing. Groups are limited to 25 people.

Donations may be made in Shirley’s name to St. John’s Reformed Church, 493 Evans City Road, Butler, PA 16001, or the Butler County Symphony Association, 259 S. Main St., Butler, PA 16001.
