Police in Butler County are hoping to nail the person or persons responsible for several similar — and unusual — cases of would-be vandalism.

Since Monday, roofing or construction nails have been reportedly found in the driveways of six homes in Butler and Connoquenessing townships.

Butler Township Police Chief John Hays said that his department is investigating four of the cases in which numerous nails — each about an inch and a half — were found at the end of driveways between Monday and Wednesday.

Two of the homes where the nails were found are on North Eberhart Road and one home each on Route 68 and Meridian Road.

Hays said the nails possibly were thrown from a vehicle, with the likely intent to cause flat tires. No damage was reported.

It was not known why the homes were targeted, however, police noted that they all had political signs. But whether the incidents are politically motivated, Hays could not say.

State police reported that they too are investigating two similar cases. Troopers said roofing nails were found Tuesday morning at the end of the driveway and the mailbox area of two homes — on Kroll Lane and Goose Haven Lane, both in Connoquenessing Township.

No other information about the state police investigation was immediately available.

State police are investigating the incidents as cases of criminal mischief. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 724-284-8100.
