Firefighters respond to flames in chimney
MIDDLESEX TWP— Four departments were called out to a chimney fire Thursday morning at a rental home on the 400 block of Sandy Hill Road in the township, authorities said. The fire was quickly extinguished, and no one was injured.
The tenant said he was leaving for work around 7:20 a.m. when he discovered the fire at the ranch-style home, which sits at the end of a quarter-mile-long driveway.
“I noticed the fire from the chimney,” said the man, who did not want to give his name. He said he believed a wood burner possibly started the fire.
He deployed a fire extinguisher he keeps near the wood burner, which is in the area of the kitchen and dining room.
“Every time I saw a hot spot,” he said, “I hit it with the extinguisher.”
Middlesex Township volunteer firefighters subsequently arrived and found the fire had spread to the roof.
Middlesex Township police officer Alex Mills said smoke was coming from both ends of the roof when he arrived.
Firefighters attacked the fire with water, Mills said, and they also used a chain saw to cut ventilation holes in the roof. The tenant said crews also used air-compressed foam.
The fire was under control in about 20 minutes, said Tim Taviz, assistant chief for the Middlesex Township Volunteer Fire Department.
A damage estimate was not available. The tenant said that because of the damage, he would be looking to move to another rental home.
Assisting the Middlesex Township VFD were firefighters from Saxonburg and Penn Township in Butler County and Richland Township in Allegheny County.
