Fugitive surfaces, then quickly disappears

A fugitive on the run for more than six months on charges in connection with a home invasion earlier this year in Butler surfaced last week in the city, authorities said.

The wanted suspect — Lamont A. “Butt Butt” Franklin, 19, of Butler — managed to get away, according to city police, but not before allegedly leaving behind a backpack.

Inside the backpack, police said, was a handgun reported stolen from Ohio.

Police now have a second felony arrest warrant for Franklin. In the latest warrant issued Friday, he is charged with receiving stolen property; convicts not to possess firearms; and possession of a firearm without a carry license, all felonies.

In the warrant for the alleged Feb. 16 home invasion in the city's Island neighborhood, he is charged with several felonies including burglary, robbery and conspiracy.

Following that incident on Negley Avenue, police discovered Franklin with a gunshot wound. He was treated at a Pittsburgh hospital and released before investigators in March filed charges against him and three others in the suspected home invasion.

Police had been looking for the teen since that time when they were called about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday for a disturbance on Eighth Avenue. At least one 911 caller, police said, described seeing a man known as “Butt Butt” leaving the area with a gun, supposedly in a backpack.

Officers answered the call and were told that there had been a fight involving three women. They also found a U-Haul truck parked nearby at Goldwood Avenue and McGeary Street.

In the passenger seat of the rental truck was Dalton J. Anthony, 18, of Butler. Police described Anthony as an “associate” of Franklin's. He also is the boyfriend of Franklin's sister, Lamaria M. Franklin, 21, of Butler.

Anthony denied having seen the fugitive Franklin, police said, and claimed he knew nothing of the suspect's whereabouts.

Officers fanned out to look for Franklin, but to no avail. They did, however, find a black backpack leaning against the side of a home on Goldwood Avenue.

A search of the backpack turned up a .40-caliber pistol that had a loaded magazine with 11 bullets. Later, police said they learned the gun was previously reported stolen from Warren, in Trumbull County, Ohio.

The investigation of the fight, meanwhile, identified the alleged combatants, which included Franklin's girlfriend, Keanna E. McClain, 19, of Butler; and Lamaria Franklin, police said.

Another woman told police that McClain and Lamaria Franklin had “jumped” her. The alleged victim had a cut on her lip.

McClain and Lamaria Franklin denied any altercation with the victim.

That same victim, according to charging documents, advised police that she “has been having issues” with the two women ever since the alleged home invasion.

The victim is a relative of Franklin's and her mother is related to him by marriage, police. She and her mother were at the Negley Avenue home when three males reportedly forced their way inside.

One of the intruders allegedly held down the mother while another one held down her 14-year-old son, who lives with her.

The boy reported one of suspects also had a handgun. Police believe it was Franklin with the gun, which has not been recovered.

A third suspect, the mother recounted, went upstairs and confronted her daughter and the daughter's ex-boyfriend. Detectives believe the ex-boyfriend was the target of the home invasion.

The suspected robbers thought the man had “a large amount of money,” court documents said.

The trio left and no one in the house was injured. The victims, police said, did not immediately report the incident.

Later that morning, police discovered Franklin with a gunshot wound to his right side near the lower abdomen. He was found at Lamaria Franklin's house on Brown Avenue. He was treated at a Pittsburgh hospital for the gunshot wound.

Police subsequently learned of the home invasion, authorities said, and the victims identified the intruders as Franklin; his uncle, Maurice Franklin, 27, of Freeport; and a 17-year-old Butler boy.

Maurice Franklin and the boy were previously arrested and both are charged with burglary, robbery, conspiracy and terroristic threats.

Eventually, police also arrested the 17-year-old's girlfriend, Sarah E. Fox, 20, of Allison Park, who they say admitted to being the getaway driver during the planned home invasion.

She, too, is charged with burglary, robbery and conspiracy. Her case and Maurice Franklin's case are pending in Butler County court. The boy's case is pending in county juvenile court.

Before Lamont Franklin was released from UPMC Presbyterian hospital, a detective spoke to him about how he got shot. His account, however, was ultimately proven false, police said.

He also denied knowing anything about the home invasion, police said. Investigators believe he was shot during or shortly after the alleged crime.

While investigating Wednesday's incident, documents said, police reviewed surveillance video that showed Lamaria Franklin opening the rear of the U-Haul and Franklin getting out.

Additionally, documents said, the video “shows Lamaria going to the front of (the) U-Haul to retrieve the black back pack and Lamont taking it from her and then leaving the area on foot.”

Lamaria Franklin told officers that she was driving the U-Haul, and was using it to move from Brown Avenue to Goldwood Avenue. But she denied recently seeing her brother.

“She stated several times to officers that she has not seen Lamont since his warrant,” documents said.

On Thursday, police arrested Lamaria Franklin and Anthony. District Bill O'Donnell arraigned both defendants on a felony charge of hindering apprehension or prosecution.

Lamaria Franklin also is charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, and harassment, a summary. She and Anthony are in the Butler County Prison on $20,000 bond each.

Police on Friday obtained an arrest warrant for McClain, who is charged with hindering apprehension or prosecution and harassment.
