Man accused of having neighbor's stolen jewelry

Bryan Brown

A Butler man is facing a November hearing for allegedly selling several pieces of stolen jewelry — including the wedding ring of the victim's dead husband.

City police said their investigation earlier this month led to the home of 39-year-old Bryan J. Brown, where they said they found more than a dozen additional pieces belonging to the victim, his neighbor.

Police on Saturday arrested Brown on a felony charge of receiving stolen property. He is free on $10,000 bail while awaiting his preliminary hearing Nov. 9.

The victim, a 57-year-old woman, spoke to police Sept. 14 after reporting a burglary at her apartment on the 200 block of West Jefferson Street, investigators said.

She told officers that she also discovered jewelry missing. Police said they found no forced entry into the apartment.

Patrolman Dakota Fennell checked a precious metals website, according to charging documents, and learned that Brown had sold several jewelry items to a Butler jewelry store.

Police said they checked at the store and found that the defendant sold a combined five pieces of jewelry on Sept. 8 and 14 for $310.

The victim subsequently identified four of those items belonging to her, police said, but she was not certain about one of the other ones.

On Saturday, officers executed a search warrant at Brown's apartment. He lives in the same building as the victim.

The search turned up 15 pieces of jewelry, police said, that the victim eventually identified as hers.

During an interview, police said, Brown denied wrongdoing.
