Butler County's great daily newspaper

Pro-Am slated for late Sept.

The second annual Butler County Pro-Am Fall Golf Classic will take place Sept. 28-29 at Butler Country Club and Cranberry Highlands.

The event consists of foursomes — three amateurs and a Tri-State PGA pro — playing 18 holes of golf the first day at Butler Country Club (dinner to follow), then 18 holes at Cranberry Highlands the following day.

“I know a lot of events have been canceled this year,” said Jack Cohen, president of the Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau. “We felt it was important to keep the momentum going with this event from last year.

“We had a lot of success with this last year and we didn't want to lose that.”

Instead, they want to build on it.

The Tri-State PGA has run two pro-ams already this year.

“At first, we were hesitant to get involved (with Pro-Ams) this year because of the COVID situation,” TSPGA executive director David Wright said. “We were able to run the first two responsibly and safely. We're very excited about this one.”

Entry fee is $300 per player, $900 per team. Lunches, a gift, prizes, dinner and an awards ceremony are all included along with golding with a local pro.

“We wanted to make this as affordable as possible for the average golfer,” Wright said. “We just played an event at Cranberry and that course is always in tremendous shape, Add to that the historic Butler County Club and this is a memorable golf experience.”

Last year's event had a little over 70 golfers and 13 TSPGA pros. Wright said the goal this year is to attract 100 golfers and 20 pros.

Cohen believes that can happen. Another $10,000 will be added to whatever the original purse turns out to be for the victorious pro.

“This will be one of our bigger first-place purses of the season,” Wright said.

“I know the money will be attractive to the Tri-State pros and with this taking place in late September, their season is pretty much wrapping up,” Cohen said. “This is like an extra event for them.”

Golfers wishing to join the event may call the Tri-State PGA office at 724-774-2224 and ask for David or Andrew, or go to www.VisitButlerCounty.com/ProAm2020.

“Being outside is healthy and I wanted to make sure that everyone realizes that golf in Butler County is bigger than ever,” Cohen said.

“We got a lot of golfers in from out of town to take advantage of this opportunity last year and I think we'll get more this year. This really is a unique golf experience.”
