Chicora man hurt in crash

A Chicora man was badly hurt after a one-vehicle crash in a construction zone early Sunday left him trapped in the pickup truck he was driving on Route 422 in Summit Township, authorities said.

Nathan A. Carben, 27, later was flown by medical helicopter with unspecified serious injuries to a Pittsburgh hospital. His condition was not known.

State police said Carben was traveling east on Route 422 just west of the Mitchell Hill exit just after 1 a.m. when he struck multiple construction lane markers, guiderails and a portion of a concrete barrier.

The truck subsequently crashed into a parked construction trailer, police said. The wreck closed the road for about three hours, according to emergency crews.

Lick Hill and East Butler volunteer firefighters and East Butler Ambulance assisted police. Firefighters had to cut at least one door off of the truck to free Carben from the wreckage, authorities said. He was the only occupant in the pickup.

A landing zone was set up at a church parking lot at Mitchell Hill and Protzman roads. Carben was flown by helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The truck was later towed. Police said their investigation continues.
