Donegal Twp. bridge replaced

A 92-year-old bridge at the intersection of Rabbitt and Rattigan roads in Donegal Township was replaced, thanks to the $5 vehicle registration fee approved in 2018 by the county commissioners.

The county will use the $5 fee fund to reimburse the township $51,594 for work on the 33-foot bridge, which was opened in November.

The new box culvert bridge will allow up to 40 tons to cross the bridge, as opposed to the former limit of 10 tons, said Kevin Gray, the county bridge and fleet director.

The new span is also eight feet wider than the old bridge.

Other funding for the $1.54 million project includes $1.46 million from the state Department of Transportation and $25,649 from the township.

Gray said the new bridge will need to be refurbished in 20 to 30 years, but will not need replacing for at least 75 years.

He said bridges are replaced or refurbished based on factors such as age, weight limit and traffic volume.
