A truck transporting an oversized load took seven hours to slowly travel in reverse down the North Main Street hill after an apparent mechanical malfunction Friday, according to witnesses.

The disabled vehicle was still there late Sunday, blocking a lane of traffic near Penn Street.

“I heard something pop, sounded like a TV blew up,” said Joe Sullins, a resident of The Towers apartment complex at 600 N. Main Street. “I heard him shifting, going up the hill until I heard something snap.”

North Main Street, from the Penn Street intersection to the top of the hill, was blocked by police vehicles as the oversized load sluggishly inched along in the rain past the B'Nai Abraham Synagogue around 6:45 p.m.

Sullins thinks the truck's axle broke just as the northbound vehicle was reaching the top of the hill. Sullins said the vehicle had been reversing cautiously down the hill since noon Friday.

“A cop told me ... it was a million pounds on that truck,” said Jose Hugus, another Towers resident who was watching alongside Sullins from the sidewalk.

The road reopened to traffic around 7 p.m., Friday with an adjusted traffic pattern.
