UPDATE: COVID-19 surge felt nationally overnight, statewide totals decrease

UPDATE: The Eagle apologizes for any confusion over the numbers reported earlier.As predicted earlier in the week by state and national health officials, the nation saw a surge in the number of new cases of the coronavirus and deaths from the virus overnight.Butler County numbers, however, only increased by five new cases. And the state's increased by 1,676, including 78 new deaths.According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, counties reported 1,676 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, down from the more than 1,900 reported the day before. Additionally, 78 people from the commonwealth died from the virus.The Associated Press reports the U.S. death toll from COVID-19 briefly overtook Italy's for the highest in the world Saturday, according to the running tally kept by Johns Hopkins University.The United States eclipsed Italy in reporting more than 18,850 dead around midday. A short time afterward, Italy reported a total of nearly 19,500.Deaths have been declining in recent days in Italy while rising rapidly in the U.S.The Johns Hopkins figures are based on data supplied by government health authorities around the world. The true numbers of dead and infected are believed to be much higher because of testing shortages, different counting practices and concealment by some governments.Butler Health System spokeswoman Jana Panther said the system's medical supplies are adequate at this time, but it continues to accept any donations of personal protective equipment.
