Homeowner, dog escape unhurt

Electrical failure in a basement laundry room was the apparent cause of a fire Sunday evening that damaged a home on Seipe Lane in Adams Township, authorities said.

The homeowner was at the ranch-style house shortly after 6:30 p.m. when the fire broke out, but he was not injured. The man's name was not immediately available.

An Adams Township police officer was first on scene after the initial fire call and found the homeowner still in the house trying to put out the fire, said Al Minjock, assistant chief for the Adams Area Fire District.

The officer convinced the man to leave the house, which is in a rural part of the township off Hammond Road and west of Three Degree Road. The owner's dog also made it out safely.

Firefighters got there and found smoke coming from the home. A crew immediately went in and determined there was fire in the basement and wall.

“They opened up the wall and extinguished the fire,” Minjock said. The fire was confined to the laundry room, and only 10 gallons of water were needed to extinguish it.

“We've ruled the fire started in the basement and it was electrical,” he said.

The entire house sustained smoke damage. The damage to the home and contents was estimated at $35,000, authorities said. The property was insured.

About 50 firefighters from seven departments responded. Assisting the Adams Area Fire District were firefighters from Cranberry Township, Callery, Evans City, Harmony Fire District, Middlesex Township and Wexford.

Adams firefighters were back at their station about 8:40 p.m.
